Paris: L'Imprimerie Royale, 1788. Two parts in one, 4 o (248 x 198 mm). Contemporary French mottled calf, the Bourbon arms stamped in gilt at center of each cover, spine gilt-decorated (some light rubbing, calf somewhat dried). FIRST EDITION of these detailed sailing directions for the rich French colony of Saint-Domingue (modern day Haiti), then at the height of its prosperity. The French Ministry sent Chastenet-Puységur to the island in 1784-85 to take cartographical measurements and draw up a new set of maps of the colony. He spent fourteen months surveying the area and published both this work and the Pilote de L'Isle de Saint-Domingue in 1787 (see James E. McClellan III, Colonialism and Science: Saint Domingue and the Old Regime , Chicago, 2010, p.125). Ruttiers of this sort were used by mariners to supplement their sea charts and are one of the oldest forms of navigational aids. At end are M. de Lieudé de Sepmanville's notes on Gonave Island, which he had surveyed in 1787. JCB (I) 3116; Sabin 12235.
