Small folio, 267 x 190 mm. 10 1/2 x 7 7/16 in.), brown calf, covers with triple gilt fillet borders, spine in six compartments, five gilt, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, turn-ins gilt, edges marbled and gilt, by SIMIER, joints cracked, rubbed, small marginal repair to title-leaf, a few small stains, occasional light mostly marginal foxing . RULED IN RED THROUGHOUT, bâtarde type, calligraphic initials with grotesque heads (including opening title initial), a few criblé initials, large woodcut of a scribe within four-part non-uniform woodcut border on fol. A1r, full-page genealogical woodcut between K4 and L1, small text woodcut of a university lecturer on L1r. First edition to contain the "Débat du gras et maigre", used as copy by Galliot Du Pre for his 1529 edition ,one of the first vernacular editions to be printed in roman type. The large opening woodcut is possibly unique to this edition; the smaller text cut was first used in the Paris 1488 edition of La Mer des histoires (Goff R-346).
