Folding engraved frontispiece by William Marshall; engraved portraits of Charles I and the Prince of Wales. (Some very minor dampstains on upper margins of text and plates.) Provenance : Monogram stamp "M" enclosed within a circle surmounted by a crown on endpapers -- Frances Burnett, the gift of Mrs. Carlisle (inscription on verso of front free endpaper) -- Henry Cottrell, gift of Frances Burnett (her inscription on front free endpaper) -- Hilda Level (bookplate). Published just prior to Charles I's execution, Eikon Basilike (or 'Royal Image') was believed at the time to have been composed by the King himself. Its intense popularity resulted in an appearance of some forty-seven editions during a brief span, and illicited a critical response from parliament in the form of Milton's 'Eikonoklastes' (see lot 284). The work was claimed to have been written by Dr. John Gauden (1605-62), bishop of Worcester. This copy is bound in an austere binding of the period. Almack 43; Madan 25; Wing E307.
