Charles Emile Jacque French, 1813-1894 Watering Hole Signed Ch. Jacques (ll) Oil on canvas 32 1/4 x 39 1/2 inches Provenance: Private collection, Lake Geneva, WI This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne on Jacque by J.P. Chambon. A painter of the French Barbizon School, Jacque was a friend of Jean-Francois Millet, with whom he moved to Barbizon, France, in 1849, fleeing the cholera epidemic in Paris. This image of a shepherdess and her flock in a densely painted rural landscape is a fine example of a subject Jacque painted with devotion over the course of his Barbizon years.
