Charles Emile Jacque French, 1813-1894 Watering Hole Signed Ch. Jacques (ll) Oil on canvas 32 1/4 x 39 1/2 inches Provenance: Private collection, Lake Geneva, WI This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne on Jacque by J.P. Chambon. A painter of the French Barbizon School, Jacque was a friend of Jean-Francois Millet, with whom he moved to Barbizon, France, in 1849, fleeing the cholera epidemic in Paris. This image of a shepherdess and her flock in a densely painted rural landscape is a fine example of a subject Jacque painted with devotion over the course of his Barbizon years. Frame rubbing. Scattered area of craquelure. Dense varnish, making it difficult to detect further restoration under UV light. There is possible inpaint in the sky.
