Beschreibung:

(Charles, editor) The Daily News, No.1, broadsheet, c.610 x 460 mm., 8pp., 6 columns, folding creases, some light wear to folds with a few small holes, light browning to head, [William Bradbury], 21 January, 1846. *** "The Principles advocated by The Daily News will be Principles of Progress and Improvement; of Education, Civil and Religious Liberty, and Equal Legislation; Principles, such as its conductors believe the advancing spirit of the time requires." Daily News, No.1, editorial. An exceptionally scarce piece of Dickensiania. We can trace only two other copies at auction (the Self-Eckel-Parrish-Suzannet copy, Christies New York, 2 April, 2008 and these rooms, 28 November 2013). It contains the first of Dickens' letters from Italy, printed here as"Travelling Letters. Written on the Road." Dickens had long maintained the ambition of founding a leading liberal newspaper in part as a rival to the right-wing Morning Chronicle. The paper was not an immediate success (its price of 6d. perhaps indicated the limited nature of the initial print run), and Dickens handed the reins over to his friend John Forster.
