(Charles Bertie, Major, later Brigadier-General, DSO, Commander 11th Infantry Brigade, killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916, 1869-1916) [Diary of the 1st Battalion Somerset Light Infantry], 184pp., duplicated in carbon, slightly browned, half crushed and polished morocco, corners bumped, edges a little rubbed, by Bumpus of Oxford, 175 x 125mm., 4th August - 16th December 1914. *** Ypres. "During the afternoon Capt Jones-Mortimer and Capt. Smith were wounded by a high explosive shell... . B Coy dug fresh trenches during the night at the Eastern end of the line near St Yves - During the night Germans got into a trench about 600 yds north... and 2 sections of B Coy were lent to OC Hants Regt to recapture it - The counter attack failed with heavy casualties - At daylight this trench was found to have been evacuated by the Germans and the line was restored. Ch Prowse Major Cmd 1st Somerset LI Nov. 3 1914." Battalion diary compiled by Prowse documenting the first five months of the war on the Western Front. The battalion fought at the battle of the Marne and were involved in the First Battle of Ypres and the beginning of the utter stalemate that led to the trench systems across the Western Front. Prowse point cemetery is the only cemetery in Ypres Salient named after an individual. The cemetery is the site of the stand by the 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment and the 1st Battalion the Somerset Light Infantry in October 1914, which featured the heroism of Major Charles Prowse.
