Beschreibung:

CHAPUIS, Jean. Le Tresor ou les sept articles de la foi , in French verse, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [France, mid-15th century] 219 x 143mm. 33 leaves, collation uncertain, justification 120 x 71mm, written in brown ink in a very fine batârde hand with calligraphic flourishes. 108 TWO-LINE ILLUMINATED INITIALS, gold on red or blue ground, beginning each verse. Blue morocco gilt, red doublures, gilt tooled by Petit, vellum endpapers, edges gilt. PROVENANCE: The Pene du Bois Collection Sale, New York 1887; Charles E. Roseman Collection, presented to the Cleveland Museum of Art 1954, their discreet withdrawal stamp on flyleaf. TEXT: This poem was usually attributed to Jean de Meung (d. 1305), best known as the author of the second part of the Roman de la Rose . It is often found in manuscripts with his ' Testament ' and ' Codicile '. It is now accepted that the author is Jean Chapuis, a contemporary, of whom nothing appears to be known. The end of the poem is a word play on his name Que les coippeaux et les chappuis Prendras en gre que jen chappuie Car ce te plaist que on en puelt faire. The poem has only been printed once, by M. Méon, Le Roman de la Rose , Paris 1814 (vol. III, pp. 331-395). Comparing the present manuscript with this edition, we find that it commences with line 145, omitting 14 verses after line 408 and lacking one verse before line 660. Lines 187-206 have been copied twice but one page has been lightly crossed through. There are minor textual variants from the printed version. Langlois, Les manuscrits du Roman de la Rose , records 18 manuscripts in libraries, including 8 in the Bibliothèque Nationale. De Ricci, Census and Supplement records no copy in America.
