FIRST EDITION of the fourth part of the second volume of Champlain's voyages. On his fourth voyage, from 1610-1613, Champlain made a series of explorations into the interior of North America along the St. Lawrence. In June 1610, at Sorel, he engaged the Iroquois in battle for a second time. He left Canada two months later and sailed to Honfleur, leaving behind Etienne Brulé to winter with the Hurons and Algonquin and learn their language. After his marriage in 1611, Champlain sailed a fifth time for Nouvelle France, determined to explore up the St. Lawrence to Montreal. The present work describes his continued exploration in 1613 with François Grave du Pont. They reached Tadoussac in April 1613 and then, from Ile Ste-Helene, arrived at the mouth of the River Gatineau (present day Ottawa) and made it as far as Ile des Allumettes. The Ottawa River had been proposed as a possible route to the northern sea, but the expedition was turned back by Algonquins who controlled the area. Champlain returned through the La Chine rapids in June 1613 to Quebec and returned to Europe in October. For the complete work: Alden & Landis 613/30.
