Title: Ceylon: An Account of the Island, Physical, Historical, and Topographical with Notices of It's Natural History, Antiquities and Productions Author: Tennent, Sir James Emerson Place: London Publisher: Longman, Green, et al. Date: 1859 Description: xxxv, [1], 619, [1]; xvi, 655, [1] pp. With 2 wood-engraved frontispieces, wood engravings in the text; 4 maps, 2 of them folding. 22x23.5 cm. (8½x5¼"), later three-quarter gilt-ruled calf & cloth, spines tooled & lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. First Edition. The author was civil secretary to the colonial government of Ceylon from 1845 to 1850. His account, which went through five editions in eight months, contains "a vast amount of information arranged with clearness and precision." (DNB). With armorial bookplates of Philip Kingsland Crowe, sometime U.S. Ambassador to Ceylon and to South Africa. Lot Amendments Condition: Scuffs at front joint of Vol. II, near fine, a handsome set.
