Late 18th- century red goatskin, gilt border built-up from two triple fillets, a roll tool, semi-circles, and alternating small tools of tulips, acorns and fleur-de-lis, spines gilt in 7 compartments, gilt lettered black morocco labels in two, edges gilt (some rubbing, light wear to joints). FIRST EDITION of the translation of Don Quixote by Charles Jervas (ca 1675-1739), published posthumously in 1742 and, due to a printer's error, known as "the Jarvis translation." "Frequently reprinted, it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original" ( ODNB ). John Vanderbank's sixty-eight illustrations for this edition of Don Quixote represent his main occupation during the last decade of his life.
