CECIL JOHN RHODES (1853-1902); ALFRED BEIT (1853-1906) & OTTO BEIT (1865-1931) Autograph letter signed ("Yr truly C.J. Rhodes"), to A.R. Colquhoun [the Chartered Company's first Administrator], 1 p., 4, Pietersburg [Northern Transvaal], November 1890 (browned, frayed, some marginal tears, taped repairs to verso). Rhodes's letter introduces Mr Carruthers [Jack] to Colquhoun and lends him credibility. Carruthers later became an established Rhodesian mining man. He writes: "The bearer John Carruthers and 3 friends have received permission to go into Mashonaland and prospect they are also desirous of trading their goods. I hope you will give them every facility. I have known Carruthers for several years he has been several years in our employment at De Beers." One-page autograph letter to Arthur Lawley [Administrator of Matabeleland] on Burlington Hotel W. [London] headed paper, 8, n.d., n.y. [but between 1897-99]. Reading: "Heany [Major Maurice Heany of the Rhodesian local forces] said he would be good enough to look after my transport and would arrange with you as to it. I think two spring waggons." With a post script: "I will be with you in July". One-page typed letter signed ("A Beit"), to H. Marshall Hole, Esq., Civil Commissioner's Office, Bulaywayo, 4, on Wernher, Beit & Co., 1, London Wall Buildings, London E.C. headed paper, 20 July, 1905 (adhesive tape stains to upper and lower left). Beit introduces Professor von Luschan, Director of the African department of the Ethnological Museum of Berlin: "This gentleman is going to Rhodesia to study Anthroplogy (particularly skulls) and the Ancient History of the Land and I should esteem it a great favor [sic] if you would afford him all facilities you can to attain his object." One-page autograph letter signed ("Otto Beit") to Marshall Hole, on 49 Belgrave Square, S.W.1 headed paper, 12, 11 February 1924, thanking him for his congratulatory message. (4)
