by Morse's Gallery of the Cumberland, having blue-green 2-cent revenue stamp and ink identification reading, Maj. General Thos J. Wood Comdg 3rd Div 4th Corps. A of Cumbr. West Point'45, Mexican War veteran, and Indian fighter, Wood rose from Colonel of the 2nd US Cavalry to Brigadier General and division commander by Shiloh, a rank he excelled in, adding laurels at Perryville and Stones' River. Wood is best remembered for pulling his division out of line at Chickamauga amidst a of series of ill-fated and ill-defined communications with army commander Rosecrans. The gap created by Wood's division was exploited by Longstreet and nearly resulted in the complete destruction of the army of the Cumberland. Rosecrans forfeited his job, but Wood remained stalwart and attained corps command by the end of the war and a promotion to Major General in February 1865. He lived until 1906. Condition:Cdv in VG condition with minor handling and ink spill along left margin.
