Beschreibung:

with blue Fredericks, N.Y. imprint. Kilpatrick was an 1861 West Point graduate who had early service in the infantry being the first regular officer wounded (at Big Bethel) in the war before transferring to the cavalry as Lt. Colonel and Colonel of the 2nd New York. He was promoted Brigadier General in June 1863 and built a reputation as a credible, if not colorful, horseman at a time when the Army of the Potomac cavalry suffered from a debilitating inferiority complex. Kilpatrick participated in Stoneman's Raid and Gettysburg followed by the disastrous Raid on Richmond seeking to free thousands of Union POW's in the Confederate rear. Grant probably saved Kilpatrick's career by sending him to Sherman who gave him command of a division during the Atlanta campaign. Kilpatrick was seriously wounded at Resaca but returned to the saddle in July to support Sherman's advance and spar with his Confederate nemesis and ex-classmate Joe Wheeler. "Kil-Cavalry" rode with Sherman "to the sea" and received two brevet promotions to Major General that spring. He resigned from the army to become minister to Chile and died there in 1881. Condition:Cdv about EXC with one abrasion in the upper field of the albumen. Strong tones.
