He was made Brigadier General in April 1862 and named Chief Topographical Engineer. Humphreys moved to line command before the Maryland campaign in charge of a division and thereafter served with distinction for the remainder of the war. At Gettysburg he led a division in Sickles' 3rd Corps and earned a regular brevet to brigadier with a promotion to Major General for his stout defense of the exposed corps line in the Peach Orchard.
