Small cdv album 5 x 6.25 in., with gilt front and spine on embossed leather, single clasp. 29 cdv's, 4 tintypes in cdv-sized sleeves, and 2 gem-sized tintypes, plus two lithographs of Generals Grant and Sheridan cut to cdv-size. Most of the images document the Dudley family of Maine. A loose letter in the book traces the family to Lady Jane Grey and Lord Guilford Dudley. Several of the individuals in this album were Quaker ministers. The Joneses, however, Eli (1807-1890) and Sybil (1808-1873), had a calling to be missionaries. Sybil was apparently "called" first, going to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in 1840, after persuading Eli of the "rightness" of the call. They went to Liberia in 1851, traveling through Europe on their way home. In 1867 they went to the Middle East / "Holy Land" and opened a girls' school there. Their main concern, however, was for the freed slaves trying to make a "go" in Liberia. The Jones family papers are housed in the Quaker & Special Collections division of Haverford College Library. Condition: Minor scuffing of head and foot of spine and back, but overall in very good condition.
