CAUVET, Gilles Paul (1731-1788). Recueil d'ornemens à l'usage des jeunes artistes qui se destinent à la décoration des bâtimens . Paris: chez l'auteur, 1777. 2° (559 x 376mm). Engraved frontispiece by Le Roy after Taraval, engraved title with royal arms, dedication with allegorical headpiece by Martini after Julien, engraved and etched plates on 62 leaves only (of 74?), by Leroy, Mlle Liottier le jeune, Mlle Liottier l'ainée, Hemery and others after Cauvet, a few plates in bistre, letterpress privilege leaf at end. (Stain to four leaves, some marginal soiling, frontispiece bound after dedication.) Contemporary half russia (worn). Provenance : James Hugh Smith Barry (bookplate) -- [Newton Hall Library, Northumberland].

Cauvet, known as 'sculpteur de Monsieur', is considered to have started the reaction against 'le genre rocaille' and his friezes, arabesques ornaments, vases, and overdoors mark the movement from the 'style Louis XV au style dit de l'Empire' (Hoefer: Biographie Generale ). His work is dedicated 'À Monsieur', the future Louis XVIII. Berlin Kat. 483; Cohen-de-Ricci 208; and vols.I-II only of Winkelman's Arti del Disegno (Milan, 1779). (3)
