CATLIN, GEORGE O-Kee-Pa: A Religious Ceremony; and Other Customs of the Mandans . Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott, 1867. First American edition, with the 4 pp. Folium Reservatum (present as two leaves) laid-in at rear. Original publisher's purple cloth, front cover simply gilt, the rear decorated in blind. 10 inches (25 cm); 4 ff. (including half-title), 52 pp., all edges gilt. With 13 chromolithographic illustrations, protected with guard-sheets. Two-inch crack to the rear joint, some wear to head and toe of spine, overall a fresh copy internally, with the bookplate of the Museum of the American Indian (with deaccession indication dated 1921). A classic work recounting the famous suspension ceremony of the Mandan Indians, used to initiate braves. The details of the bull dance were considered lascivious, and were printed on the inserted Folium (often lacking).
