Castiglione, Baldassarre. Il libro del cortegiano del conte Baldesar Castiglione. (Venice: in the house of of Aldo Manuzio & Andrea Torresano, April 1528)
First edition of Castiglione's renowned book of manners, set at the court of Urbino. This was one of the last books to be printed before the death of Andrea Torresano in October 1528. This is a copy on standard paper; for a large paper copy, see previous lot.
The style of the lettering and the surrounding leafy decoration indicate that this binding was probably by the Vignette Binder, active in Bologna ca. 1525-1545.
Super-Chancery folio (305 x 198 mm.). Roman type, 40 lines plus headline. collation: *4 a-o8 p6: 122 leaves. Woodcut Aldine device on title-page and final verso (otherwise blank). Modern decorated initials and pictorial tailpieces for each book, mostly of animals such as ducks, rabbits and monkeys, and a mountain scene at the end, in imitation of period decoration. (Small wormholes in last few quires, first quire and last quire repaired in gutter, last two leaves lightly soiled.)
binding: Contemporary Bolognese brown morocco gilt (310 x 202 mm), lettered on covers IL CORTEGIANO within an oval leafy surround, remains of gilt and blind fillet border, gilt edges, four pairs of new ties, modern drop-backed box. (Binding extensively restored and repaired, gilding flattened and slightly worn, box slightly broken.)
