A large, detailed wooden model, approximately 32" in length, housed in a 34.75" x 13.5" x 8" pine and glass case. The vessel is identified as the Battleship Scharnhorst and the profile and superstructure of the model closely match that ship. The model's superstructure details include gun turrets, signal masts, flags, life boats and seaplanes. Constructed of various shades of scrap wood, string and paper using simple tools. A photocopy of a 1945 dated letter identifies the artist as Heinz Kania, POW 37602 interned at Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Camp 133. The model was traded to one of the guards and later purchased in 1949 by a local sporting goods store. At some point the model came into the possession of a couple in Elkhart, IN, being auctioned with their estate in 1987. It has passed through several other hand and was at one point exhibited at the U.S. Naval War College Museum, Newport, RI and The Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, New York, NY. The model is accompanied by a large archive of original and photocopy correspondence documenting the provenance of the model. Condition: Very good; some fading of the paper flags and slacking of the cord rigging lines.
