CARTA EXECUTORIA DE HIDALGUIA, issued by Philip V of Spain, in favour of Santiago Rubio de Aponte, in Spanish, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM Valladolid, 21 March 1719 295 x 196mm, 36 leaves, 23 lines written in brown ink within a frame ruling in ink: 226 x 134 mm, each recto with notary's endorsement in lower margin and armorial stamp of Philip V, large initials and openings written in two-line initials in liquid gold on grounds of blue or red patterned with gold ONE PORTRAI INITIAL beside similar text panels, TWO FULL-PAGE MINIATURES, interleaved with silk guards (worming to what were originally outer leaves including two miniature pages, royal stamps cropped below, tears to edges of paper leaves including into Ramon Zazo y Ortega's signature). Modern red velvet over boards, five metal attachments to upper cover. The delicately painted carta executoria confirms the status of hidalguia of Santiago Rubio de Aponte of Colmenar de Oreja, by Madrid, acting for himself and his sons, Joseph and Alexander, by his wife Mariana Munoz. His status was established by the earlier confirmation given in 1611 to Antonio Rubio and his son Francisco, from whom he could prove descent. The latest of the final endorsements is dated 1764. The illuminations are meticulously executed in an almost pointillist technique, shading in dots or very short brushstrokes. The soft painterly effect accords with the pastel colouring of pink, mauve, blue and green. The portrait of Philip V maintains the authority of a grand state image despite its small scale. The subjects are: f.2v In an initial D with stave terminating in a satyr mask surmounted by a crown, Philip V in armour, turning out towards the viewer. f.1v In a full-page miniature, Santiago Rubio, his wife Mariana Munoz and their sons Joseph and Alexander kneel in a garden below the Virgin and Child, supported on cherubim; a rosary is held over Joseph Rubio by the Christ Child. f.2 Full-page coat of arms in metals and colours against an elaborate strapwork surround from which hang garlands of flowers. bound with and preceded by: A GRANT OF ARMS to Francisco Herrer by Ramon Zazo y Ortega, King of Arms to Charles III, in Spanish, MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER WITH ILLUMINATED ARMORIAL ON VELLUM Madrid, 4 March 1771 1 parchment and 4 paper leaves, about 30 lines written in black ink with red headings and initials with ONE FULL-PAGE COAT OF ARMS in metals and colours. The grant of arms explains the origins of the four quarterings of the shield to be borne by Francisco Herrer by tracing his descent from the Herrer, Estevan, Serrano and Mazarracin families. It is signed by the king of arms himself. It is preceded by a full-page miniature of the coat of arms surmounted by a helm, on vellum.
