Signed by Carson in dark ink just above Brady's imprint. "KIT" CARSON, THE LEGENDARY FRONTIERSMAN. Carson, a frontier trapper and guide, became famous as the guide on John C. Fremont's celebrated western expeditions of 1842, 1843 and 1845 and played a role in the military contest over California. He served in several army campaigns against the Apache, Navaho, Comanche and Kiowa tribes. During the Civil War he joined the Union command of General Edward Canby in New Mexico and Texas and was brevetted a brigadier-general for gallantry. Signed photographs of Carson are increasingly rare. According to some biographers Carson was only semi-literate: in the 1850s "he could...merely write (doubtless imitatively) his name and title..." (DAB). Another Brady carte-de-visite, signed, but with corners trimmed, sold for $26,290 in 2008.
