Wood-engraved frontispiece and 49 illustrations, 2 full-page, by the Dalziel Brothers after John Tenniel (Some spotting to half-title, slight ink stain to upper blank margins of C7-8, small blank section of lower outer corner of E1 torn away, light creasing to outer corners of K5 and K6.) Original red cloth by Burn & Co., blocked in gilt, gilt edges (slightly soiled and scuffed, old ink stain to upper cover, stitching slightly weak, inner hinges splitting), red morocco-backed slipcase. Provenance : presentation copy to his sister, Henrietta (half-title inscribed in violet ink 'Henrietta Harington Dodgson with the Author's best love. Christmas. 1871') -- R.H. Mills (book-label) -- purchased from James F. Drake, New York, 1 February 1939, $30. Exhibited : Grolier Club, New York (1950s exhibition label loosely inserted). PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO HIS SISTER OF THE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with the misprint 'wade' instead of 'wabe' on p. 21. Dodgson's diary records that on 8 December 1871 he signed and sent off 100 presentation copies of Through the Looking-Glass after receiving the books from his publisher: 'Received from Macmillan three Looking-Glasses in morocco, and 100 in cloth. I first sent off three to the Deanery (the one for Alice being in morocco), then sent to friends in Ch.[rist] Ch.[urch] and to Parkers to be packed for book-post, 95 in cloth, and two in morocco (for Florence Terry and Tennyson), making a total of 99 given away in one day. I have just found one more to send, to G.M.E. Brine, thus completing the number 100 '. The size of his family goes some way to explain why so many copies were needed. Henrietta, the recipient of this copy, was the youngest but one one of his ten siblings. Born in 1843, she was younger than Charles by eleven years.
