Near uniform contemporary green morocco gilt, covers with arms of Madame Marie-Louise-Thérèse-Victoire de France [Olivier 2514, fer 5], gilt-tooled spines with repeated fleuron, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (overall fading to near brown). Provenance : 'Ce livre m'a été donné par Madame Victoire le 11 Janvier 1768 Le Grin 23 vol.' (inscription in vol. I). Mixed edition. Vol. XIV is differently labelled and tooled. Madame Victoire (1733-1799), seventh child of Louis XV and Marie Leczinska, used green morocco to distinguish her books from those of her sisters, Madame Adélaïde and Madame Sophie. [HARDION, Jacques (1686-1766)]. Nouvelle histoire poëtique ... composés pour l'usage de Mesdames . Paris: J. Guerin 1751. 3 volumes, 12° (165 x 93mm). Dedication to Madame [Victoire] with her engraved arms at head. Contemporary green morocco gilt, covers with arms of Madame Victoire [Olivier 2514 fer 2], red morocco labels in two spine compartments, the other four with repeated fleuron and surrounding small tools, comb-marbled endpapers, red silk markers, gilt edges. Memoires ... contenant les differentes Négociations dont il a été chargé dans les Cours de France, d'Espagne, et de Portugal , Lausanne [and elsewhere?], 1750-1753, 9 volumes in 10, 12° (occasional soiling and waterstaining, possibly lacking two unnumbered appendix vols. or 'pièces justicatives' following vols. VII and VIII), contemporary citron morocco, covers with gilt arms of Madame Sophie [Olivier 2514 fer 5], gilt spines with repeated fleuron, gilt edges (soiled, extremities slightly worn). Mixed edition, vols. I-VI without place. Two vols. are described as volume VI on the title-page but have differing texts. The one unnumbered vol. of 'pièces justicatives' relates to vol. VI. The spines are numbered consecutively to X, and have a fleuron identical with that used on the first binding above. cf. Quérard 256. The lot sold as a collection of bindings not subject to return.
