CARL FRIEDRICH PHILIPP VON MARTIUS (1794-1868) Historia Naturalis Palmarum. Leipzig: 1823-1850. Volumes II and III only (of 3), large 2° (620 x 455mm). 190 hand-coloured lithographed plates only. (Most plates browned, ten plates in vol.II and most plates in vol.III with some worming.) Vol.II: disbound, g.e., vol.III: contemporary half cloth, g.e. (worn). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. This monumental monograph on palms was based on the author's travels in Brazil in 1818-1820 where he had been sent with Spix in the suite of Archiduchess Leopoldina to study tribal indians and natural history. The monograph was expanded to include all species then known. Artists included Martius himself, Ferdinand Bauer Johann Moritz Rugendas J.C.Schott, Frans Post and others. Cf.
