Généralement considéré comme son ouvrage le plus important, l'Architectura civil est le livre d'architecture le plus ambitieux rédigé en espagnol. C'est dans cet ouvrage que le polymathe Caramuel essaye d'appliquer pour la première fois le phénomène de l'anamorphose sur des structures en trois dimensions. Les traités précédents de Nicéron, Caus et Maignan étaient basés sur des représentations sur des surfaces plates. Ce livre est richement illustré de 170 illustrations, gravées d'après les dessins de l'auteur. On connaît des exemplaires (tel que celui répertorié à Harvard) sans le portrait qui est daté de 1679. Ici le portrait est plus court de marges et monté sur onglet L'ouvrage aborde les sujets habituels de l'architecture civile (géométrie pratique, mesures, perspective, Cinq Ordres) mais Caramuel discute également de la reconstruction du temple de Salomon ainsi que des structures architecturales du nouveau monde tel que l'église des Franciscains à Santo Domingo (partie III, pl. 13). “The principal innovation of the treatise was contained in the second volume in a discussion of architectura recta (“orthogonal architecture”, tratado V) and architectura obliqua (“oblique architecture; tratado VI), which dealt respectively with the orders and distortion (anamorphosis) that he believed were necessary to accomodate them to the more dynamic contemporary architecture... Caramuel claimed that his ideas on anamorphosis dated from 1624. Architects were already designing buildings with complex shapes, but Caramuel sought to extend the distortions from the wall surface to the orders themselves, so all sloping elements in a building would involve the use of equivalent oblique members such as balusters, column capitals and architraves” (Deckker, in DA, V, p. 700). “Throughout his adventurous life he served in various ecclesiastical and state missions, lastly as a bishop of Vigevano (near Milan), where he died in 1682. He was an extremely prolific author. He produced two hundred and sixty works, of which only sixty were published. Caramuel contributed to several disciplines including music, physics, mathematics, linguistics, and architecture.
