Provenance : William Philip Molyneux, 4th Earl of Sefton (1835-1897, Croxteth Hall, Liverpool, armorial bookplate). A fine collection of Cook's three voyages. The first voyage includes some plates inserted from another copy, and the third voyage is bound in three volumes with the larger format plates bound-in, rather than with the more usual four volumes with an atlas volume. "THE FAMOUS ACCOUNTS OF CAPTAIN COOK'S THREE VOYAGES FORM THE BASIS FOR ANY COLLECTION OF PACIFIC BOOKS. In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors had done together. He was the first really scientific navigator and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge": Hill p.61. (8)
