Canberra Bomber. A presentation photograph album from Hanford Stevens, Senior Representative, Department of Supply, Commonwealth of Australia, London, SW1, early 1950s, containing 285 gelatin silver print photographs mounted singly and as pairs on stiff paper rectos with typed captions beneath, images mostly 18.5 x 11.5 cm and similar sizes, original cloth with silver lettering to upper cover and screw studs to spine, soiled and frayed, oblong folio (Qty: 1) A good pictorial record of the manufacture and engineering of the first British jet bomber, designed by English Electric and built by the Australian government aircraft factory. Joseph Hanford Stevens (1906-1976) first worked for the family firm of A.J. Stevens, Wolverhampton, manufacturing motorcycles. After the war he was appointed to the Commonwealth Public Service, serving at Canberra House until 1953. Here he was responsible for negotiating with the English Electric Co. Ltd to build a Canberra Bomber in Australia.
