[CANADA - DEER HUNTING] LIVERMORE, BERT Manuscript diary describing seven three-week deer hunts in Canada in the years 1897-1902. [Newark Valley, NY: 1897-1902]. Original folding cloth portfolio "Excelsior Diary," with leather border, with name, title, and dates in manuscript on the lower cover. 5 5/8 x 2 7/8 inches; [174] pp.; manuscript plan of 1899 camp, ink-and-pencil map for the 1901 hunt, receipt for cartridge shells in inner pocket. Leather rubbed away at corners, some paste residue to cloth, tape repair to front pastedown, interior fine. Bert Livermore, a shoe store clerk from Newark Valley, NY, made deer hunting trips to Canada each year with a group of friends. Here he lists names and addresses of the hunting party and a table with each year's bag. He provides a brief account for each day's activities, notes on transportation to and from the camp, anecdotes, some expense accounting, and camp life. In 1897: "A. E. Bradstreet shot a fine doe, 2-year old in narrows from upper pine near Burnt lake. Called for me to dress it"; in 1898: "I went with Mr. Miller North East of camp to a new watch & shot the first deer of the season at 8:30 & a fawn on same morning about 9:30"; in 1900: "Weather very warm, went bathing in lake today. Had plenty of fresh fish from lake, perch, bull heads, chubs, also some trout." A detailed description of hunting in Canada at the turn of the last century. C Estate of Arnold 'Jake' Johnson
