CAMPBELL, Colen (d.1720). Vitruvius Britannicus, or The British Architect, containing The Plans, Elevations, and Sections of the Regular Buildings, both Publick and Private, in Great Britain . [London: Sold by the author, n.d.]-1731.
CAMPBELL, Colen (d.1720). Vitruvius Britannicus, or The British Architect, containing The Plans, Elevations, and Sections of the Regular Buildings, both Publick and Private, in Great Britain . [London: Sold by the author, n.d.]-1731. 3 volumes (of 5), 2 o (458 x 283 mm). 3 engraved title-pages, engraved dedication in volume one, parallel text in English and French. Volume one: engraved title-page and dedication, 82 engraved plates and plans (14 double with some folding) numbered 3-100; volume 2: engraved title-page, 74 engraved plates and plans (17 double with some folding) numbered from 2-100; volume 3: title-page printed in red and black, 73 engraved plates and plans (23 double with one folding) numbered 3-100 (volume 3 lacking the engraved dedication leaf and without plate 101 as usual, plate 37 in volume one loose with edges frayed and spotted, one or two other marginal tears not affecting the images, some folds lightly soiled). Contemporary paneled calf gilt (a bit scuffed at the edges, some surface wear, hinges starting). THE FIRST PATTERN BOOK OF ENGLISH ARCHITECTURE. Third edition of volumes one and 2, second edition of volume 3. Focusing attention on the architectural merit rather than the topographical situation of the nation's great buildings, it began as a venture by a publishing group of booksellers who adopted Campbell, a skilled architectural draughtsman, as their author only shortly before publication of the first edition of volume one in 1715. The names of the booksellers and the original dates of publication have been removed from the engraved titles. Most plates in volume one are unsigned, though a few are signed by Campbell as artist. The plates in volumes 2 and 3 are largely by Henry Hulsbergh after Campbell. A fourth and fifth volume of designs by John Woolfe and James Gandon were published in 1767 and 1771: "We have throughout this production considered Mr. Campbell as our leader; and have, therefore, no way deviated from his plan, that this might be a proper supplement to his work..." (from the "Introduction" to volume 4). Fowler 76 (first editions of volumes. I-IV); Harris 103; Millard British 10. (3)
