ARCHIVE OF MAPS AND DOCUMENTS RELATING TO CALVIN HOLMES AND OTHER EARLY SONOMA VALLEY SETTLERS. After California joined the Union, many of the owners of original Mexican land grants, including Sergeant Jose de los Santos de Berryessa, the owner of the original Mallacomes Rancho and first mayor of Sonoma, sold their lands and moved back to Mexico. A great influx of Anglo settlers moved into the area, and the Napa and Sonoma valleys nurtured several great agricultural fortunes during the latter part of the 19th century. This lot features a collection of letters, documents, and maps relating to Calvin H. Holmes, who with his wife Elvira moved to Sonoma in 1861 and over the course of several decades purchased much of the land that makes up Knight's Valley (as the Mallacomes Rancho came to be called). The Holmes house still stands in Sonoma, as does the Sugarloaf Ranch house built in 1887 for their son Frank and his wife. Generations of Holmes lived in the family homestead until 1939, when the estate passed into other hands. Today the estate is the site of the prestigious Peter Michael Winery. Present here are 11 hand drawn maps, various sizes, 1872-1893, of the Napa and Sonoma Valley areas, most on waxed linen paper, all creased, many with toning and wear. Most of the maps were produced for Calvin Holmes and "Yellow Jacket Ranch"; two copies titled "From Map of part of Mallacomes Rancho Situated in Knight's Valley Sonoma County Cal."; "Map of the Land of C.P. Holmes situated near Santa Rosa California / Showing Vinyards, Orchards, & Other Improvements" (June 1886); a tract of land conveyed by Holmes to his son Edward Milton Holmes, December 6, 1893; and others. Present also are documents and correspondence relating to the sale and transfer of parcels of land in Sonoma County, October 10, 1860 to March 29, 1899, including 20 documents, most deeds for the purchase of some lands and the sales of others; a manuscript titled "Filed Notes of a Tract of Land in Napa Country surveyed for William Steward [sic]"; a copy of the "Distribution of the Estate of Elvira E. Holmes / March 29, 1909"; and miscellaneous correspondence.
