Beschreibung:

The Extra Sun. New York, NY: December 25, 1849. 2pp, 16.25 x 25.5 in. Featuring news of the California Gold Rush and political reports from the soon to be state. Front page headlines read: Two Weeks Later News From San Francisco./ Arrival of the Empire City From Chagres, Bringing $500,000, Gold Dust./ Peter A. Burnett Esq., Elected Governor of California and John McDougal Esq. Lieutenant Governor./Prices Current./ Great Rise in Prices OF Provisions./ Arrivals of vessels at San Francisco. The Extra Sun was a subsection of the New York newspaper The Sun, published from 1833-1950. Following the discovery of gold in California in 1848, word slowly began to spread throughout the United States and the world thereby igniting the California Gold Rush. By the December 1849 publication of this newspaper, Gold Rush fever had captured the attention of the country and tens of thousands of "Forty-Niners" had already traveled west to California. The Eastern United States waited eagerly for news from the West Coast which often arrived with steamers returning from their voyages West. This front page of The Extra Sun provides a wealth of period detail including difficult conditions in the burgeoning city and for the miners, the election of California's first governor, prices on provisions, and steamship passenger lists. Condition: Newspaper appears to have been removed from bound volume as a series of losses define the left edge line. Water stains on bottom edge line and some slight toning on top and bottom of document, however, overall newspaper is in good condition.
