Providing a virtual tour of some of the most shocking news headlines from the 1930s, this lot of 27 photographs features some of the most controversial figures of their time. The lot includes: –A group of four photographs featuring Eunice Winstead Johns, a young girl from Treadway, Tennessee, who was married at the age of nine to a twenty-two year old man with the consent of her parents. The union sparked outrage and controversy nation-wide, leading to a closer look at marriage laws in the state of Tennessee. The marriage was also the inspiration for the 1938 exploitation film, Child Bride. Three out of the four photographs have type-written captions affixed to them, with photo credit stamps for Acme, I. N. P. Sound Photo, and Central Press Association. –A group of two Associated Press photographs featuring Charles Ponzi, "the little man who startled a nation...with promises of fabulous wealth to investors." One, dated February 21, 1934 shows Ponzi with Alfred Sears, learning about the wholesale meat market, which was to be his post-jail profession. The other, dated July 12, 1934, shows Ponzi and his wife after pleading with Governor Joseph B. Ely to prevent their deportation. –A group of five photographs featuring soup kitchens and relief efforts for the unemployed during the Great Depression. Variously stamped and captioned on verso with photographer names, dates (ranging from 1930-1932), and typewritten descriptions. –A group of six photographs related to "hoboes," one of which is stamped for the Associated Press and another stamped for "Paramount Photo by Don English." Images include "hoboes" in a train car, "Hobo Queen" Polly Ellen Pep of Cuba, New York, with her cat and "King of the Hoboes," Stenska "Skeets" Simmons, and an Associated Press photograph of officers carrying a tub of the mutilated remains of an alleged victim of the "mad butcher" from a train car (date stamped May 1940). Photographs variously date stamped and captioned on verso. –A group of six gang-related photographs including one featuring surrendered Detroit Gangster, Harry Fleisher, who was wanted in connection with the Lindbergh kidnapping and other crimes, another featuring outlaw Raymond Hamilton who was sentenced to death for the murder of a prison guard, and others. Images marked for Associated Press, Acme, Wide World Photo, and others, with captions and date stamps variously included. –A group of four photographs related to Amelia Earhart, including one of Earhart's husband, George F. Putnam, and Mrs. Noonan (wife of Earhart's navigator, Frederick Noonan as they await news of their spouses from the Southern Pacific fliers, date stamped July 7, 1937. Photographs variously date stamped from 1936-1939, with two marked for Associated Press and Wide World Photo.
