Beschreibung:

c1960 ABARTH ALLEMANO 2200 COUPE Registration No. 4 VPJ Chassis No. 112 038118 Engine No. ABA 216/028 Grey with red leather interior. Engine: six cylinder, overhead valve, 2,160cc, 135bhp at 6,000rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Brakes: four wheel disc; Suspension: front, torsion bars and swing arms with anchor rod, rear, coil springs with quarter elliptic leaf springs. Right hand drive. Involved in the ill-fated Cisitalia programme, and following the project's failure Carlo Abarth formed his own company tuning engines for Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo. To publicise the business he produced a series of racing and record cars throughout the 1950s. Many people perceived that he eschewed larger displacement cars but this is not wholly correct as a few proud owners would be eager to testify. This elegant, front-engined Allemano coupe was launched at the Turin show in 1959 and was aimed at the expensive grand touring market. It boasted a high specification which included four wheel disc brakes and the largest capacity engine yet offered by Abarth - indeed it was their first six cylinder! These were all hand made 'one-off' show cars designed by Michelotti and built by Allemano Coachbuilders of Turin. Based on the Fiat 2,100cc chassis, Abarth enlarged the Lampredi-designed engine to 2,160cc and amongst other modifications fitted triple 40 DCOE Webers, gas flowed exhausts, etc., producing 135bhp and a top speed of over 120mph. The car went on sale in the UK at ¨4,000 but only two right hand drive coupes were built, of which '4 VPJ' is the only known survivor. It is believed that this car was the 1960 Earls Court Motor Show model. It is described as being very original and is known to have completed 34,532 miles from new, and is now in the hands of the second owner who rescued it from a long period of storage. It is remarkably complete, still retaining its Nardi steering wheel, Jaeger/Abarth instruments, its correct badges and even the original clear plastic protective covers on the seats. The car comes complete with its original sales literature and specification sheet. It is a rare discovery and a very interesting restoration project which, once completed, should provide a rewarding, fast touring car, unusual enough to be almost assured of an entry in even the most exclusive Historic events.
