BYRON, George Gordon 6th Baron (1788-1824). Autograph letter signed ('Byron') to Captain John Hay, Pisa, 19 January 1822, 'A Thousand and one thanks for the boar -- which has arrived in high order -- and entire', regretting that Hay is not there to share in his 'magnifique present', adding that he is writing in haste 'not to keep your man waiting', one page, 8vo .

Byron had moved to Pisa at the end of October 1821 to join the Shelleys and Teresa Guiccioli: the circle they formed in Pisa, which included, besides Hay, Edward and Jane Williams and Leigh Hunt and his family, was to be broken by the twin tragedies of 1822, first the death of Byron's five year-old daughter Allegra on 20 April and then the drowning of Shelley, Williams and Charles Vivian on 8 July.
