BUSSY-RABUTIN, Roger (1618-1695). Histoire amoureuse des Gaules . Liége [but Amsterdam?]: [1665?]. 2 parts in one volume, 12° (126 x 166mm). (Without the final blank.) Brown morocco by Trautz-Bauzonnet, gilt turn-ins, gilt and marbled edges, red silk marker, later supralibros. Provenance : purchased from Ch. Bosse, 1925. Regarded by Tchemerzine as probably the first edition printed at Amsterdam, formerly considered the first edition. As punishment for writing his witty adaptation of Petronius, with critical portraits of his cousin Madame de Sévigné and the Prince de Condé, Bussy-Rabutin was sent to the Bastille on 17 April 1665. Not released till over a year later, he then lived in enforced exile on his estates for a further 17 years. Brunet I, 1422; Tchemerzine I, 153 (fig. de gauche).

Citron morocco by Trautz-Bauzonnet, triple gilt fillets, richly gilt spine compartments, one with red morocco label, gilt turn-ins, gilt and marbled edges. Provenance : purchased from Ch. Bosse, 1925. FIRST EDITION. In this slim 78-page volume, the prose Carte geographique ... is followed by 'Maximes d'Amour' and other pieces of verse. Brunet I, 1425. (2)
