BURTON, Isabel (1831-1896), compilor A scrap album recording Burton's postings after 1861 including 32 albumen and contact prints of Fernando Po (1862-64), 57 of Brazil (1865-68), views of Paraguay and Argentina, Damascus, Jerusalem, the ruins of Baalbec, England, Italy, France and the Balkans, original signed sketches by Richard Burton (Paulo Affonso Rapids, Sao Francisco, Brazil), Isabel ('Lago di Garda, Italy - the only sketch I ever did') and Charles Tyrwhitt Drake of his travels with the Burtons in Syria, July-August 1871, a studio portrait of HBM Consul Eldridge, three photographs of 'Mr Walkers Factory' and household in Africa and of a 'Festival at Beyrouth' titled in ink by Richard Burton the majority of images titled in ink on the mounts by Isabel, together with miscellaneous prints and watercolours by and after various hands, oblong 4°, contemporary half morocco gilt for London Stereoscopic Photographic Company, spine gilt in compartments (scuffed and marked, spine ends chipped and torn with small losses). AN IMPORTANT AND MOSTLY UNPUBLISHED GRAPHIC AND PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF BURTON'S POSTINGS AFTER 1861, NOTABLY HIS CONSULSHIPS AT FERNANDO PO, SANTOS AND DAMASCUS. The Brazilian photographs include rare early images of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and the highland mining district of Minas Geraes. The extraordinary photograph of a slave muster at Morro Velho was the model for the engraving in Burton's The Highlands of the Brazil , London, 1869, I, frontispiece, and also reappears in W.H.Wilkins (ed.), The Romance of Isabel Lady Burton, London, 1897, I, p.296, and Drake's watercolour 'our Desert Camp' was reproduced in Isabel's The Inner Life of Syria , London, 1875, II, facing p.222.
