Beschreibung:

BURNETT, William Hickling. A collection of drawings of Italian scenery. [Italy:] 1831-32. 2 volumes, one oblong (480 x 305mm and 315 x 470mm). 90 ORIGINAL PENCIL AND PENCIL-AND-WASH DRAWINGS (260 x 190mm. and smaller), all by Burnett, the majority initialled 'WHB', all mounted. Modern half vellum, brown morocco lettering-pieces on spines. A fine series of drawings, perhaps produced for transfer to lithographic stones. Burnett, wrongly identified as 'Barret' on the spines of the albums, is known as a London-based painter of architectural and landscape subjects . As well as Italy, he visited Egypt, Spain, Tangier and Scotland. The only work published under his name were fourteen views of Cintra, lithographed by Hullmandel, circa 1836. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1844 to 1860. The majority of the drawings are initialled, dated and identified and were no doubt produced during a tour made by the artist between January 1831 and December 1832. From the inscriptions it is possible to reconstruct the artist's tour: starting in Florence, Burnett travelled to Ronciglione and the Lago di Garda, stayed in Rome from February to May 1831. He then visited Tivoli, Lake Albano, Subiaco and Florence, Bologna, Lago di Garda, Como and was in Vicenza in October 1831. He was in Rome again by March 1832, then in July 1832 Naples, Ischia, onto Sorrento, Amalfi, Salerno, and then Naples again from October to December 1832. (2)
