Beschreibung:

(Burke, Edmund)An Impartial History of the War in America, between Great Britain and her Colonies, from its Commencement to the end of the Year 1779. London: R. Faulder, 1780 8vo (209 x 124 mm). Folding engraved map of North America, 13 engraved portrait plates of soldiers and statesmen, section-title to Appendix; tear in folding map mended with old paper, tear to center fold of map, offset from plates, scattered light spotting. Speckled calf, gilt-stamped red morocco title label to spine; joints mended, some light wear at extremities, head of spine nicked. First English edition of this remarkably impartial treatment of the sources and consequences of the Revolution, primarily collected for its plates. The present text was first published in Dublin in 1779 as The History of the War in America, plagiarized from essays in the Annual Register of which Burke was a frequent editor and major contributor. This London edition is the first to contain the portrait plates of American revolutionaries; however, most copies are lacking one or more of the illustrations. The portraits include Washington, Franklin, Hancock, Arnold, Samuel Adams, and Howe, amongst others. REFERENCEAdams 80-45b; ESTC N7582
