BUONANNI, Filippo (1638-1725). Recreatio mentis, et oculi in observatione animalium testaceorum curiosus naturae inspectoribus . Rome: Typographia Varesii, 1684.
BUONANNI, Filippo (1638-1725). Recreatio mentis, et oculi in observatione animalium testaceorum curiosus naturae inspectoribus . Rome: Typographia Varesii, 1684. 4 parts in one volume, 4° (217 x 161mm). Engraved folding additional title, letterpress general title with woodcut Jesuit device, engraved part-title to part four, and 3 engraved section titles. 141 engraved plates, 3 half-page. Woodcut diagrams, head- and tailpieces, and initials. (Occasional light spotting, some light dampstaining, additional title trimmed at head.) Contemporary blind-tooled vellum, panelled boards with central cartouche within arabesque lozenge, titled in manuscript on the spine, red-speckled edges (a little marked and scuffed, hinges split, front free endpaper detached, binding partially detached). Provenance : early manuscript notes and shelfmarks on endpapers and verso of title -- Paul Maurice Pallary (1869-1942, bookplate, manuscript notes, vide infra ). FIRST LATIN EDITION OF THE FIRST SHELL ICONOGRAPHY; THE PALLARY COPY. First published in Rome in 1681 as Ricreatione dell' occhio e della mente nell' osservation' delle chiocciole , this first Latin edition was enlarged by the addition of a further one hundred shells. A Jesuit and student of Athanasius Kircher Buonanni became the curator of the cabinet of curiosities at the Collegio Romano, which undoubtedly provided the specimens for many of the engraved figures in this work, which caused Buonanni to be considered (with Lister and Rumpf), one of the founding fathers of conchology. This copy is from the library of the French-Algerian malacologist Pallary, who was a prolific writer on the land-snails and faunas of north-west Africa, particularly those of Morocco, Eygpt, and Syria; the species Turbonilla pallaryi , Mitrella pallaryi , and Mangelia pallaryi are named for him. Beneath many of the plates in this copy, Pallary has added manuscript notes in pencil and pen giving the Linnaean binomials of the species illustrated and the volume was clearly used as a reference in his malacological studies. BM(NH) I, p. 286; Brunet I, 1085-1086; Nissen ZBI 754.
