Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1749-1783. 25 volumes, 4° (255 x 193mm). General titles and volume titles to volumes XVI-XIV containing the Oiseaux (general title lacking to vol. XVII). 2 folding engraved maps and 837 plates (of 857, lacking plate VII to vol. III, plate XI to vol. IV and 17 plates to vol. VII) one of which hand-coloured (plate IX to vol. VI), unnumbered engraved table to vol. V. (Plates IV and V in vol. II split at crease folds and loose, the latter slightly defective as a result, plate XLI in vol. XIV with tiny hole and light damage caused by adhesion, occasional light browning and scattered spotting, staining to general title, volume title and first leaf of contents to vol. XXI, light marginal dampstain to gathering 3X in vol. XXII, gathering 2Q more heavily browned in vol. XXIII, a few very minor marginal chips to a few plates and text-leaves.) Contemporary mottled calf, covers with gilt royal arms, spines with raised bands, gilt in compartments with the cipher 'L' intertwined and crowned, red morocco lettering pieces to second and third compartments, marble endpapers, red sprinkled edges (extremities lightly rubbed, joints and head- and tailcaps more heavily, vol.
