Three related documents on vellum, 13th Century, in Latin in cursive documentary scripts, concerning lands in the hamlet of Bishopstone, comprising: Quitclaim of Walter de la Merse, chaplain, in favour of William Blacstan in respect of a virgate of land with appurtenances in the vill of Bishopstone which he had inherited from his mother Juliana de la Merse, for a fine of 10 silver marks, the witnesses including Gilbert Braci, William le Bele, John Fulcone, John de Bissopston, Thomas de la Merse and Richard Temple 14 lines on one membrane, approx 83 x 138mm (minor worm-holing touching one word, minor discolouration and wear, stamped number '1'), vellum seal tag (lacking seal). Grant by William Blacstan to Richard Temple in return for a fine of 50 shillings of silver of a rood of land 'in the field of Bishopstone which lies near Cotmaneham within the land of the aforesaid Richard', subject to the payment of one halfpenny at Easter, the witnesses including William ?Feiremit, William St Clere, William de la Merse, Richard le Gode, William son of Alan, Johan of Bishopstone, John son of William son of Fulcon and Robert son of Walter, 9 lines on one membrane, approx 89 x 200mm (worm-hole, minor browning, stamped number '2'), vellum tags (lacking seal); Grant by John le Kyng of Bishopstone to Richard Sewy of Bishopstone and his children John and Alice of a messuage with a croft and its appurtenances in the vill of Bishopstone, lying next to the royal road, to be held of the lord in chief of the fee and owing the due and customary services, the witnesses including William Blacstan, William de Sutchote, William de Temple, Roger West, Robert le Palmer, John le Meyster and William de Fonte, at Bishopstone, 'the Saturday before the feast of St Barnabas, 25 Edward I [i.e. 8 June 1297], 13 lines on one membrane, approx 114 x 196mm (a few worm-holes, some rubbing and soiling and wear to lower margin), vesical seal of John le Kyng with sword emblem on green wax, approx 37 x 27mm, pendant on vellum tag (worn). Bishopstone is a hamlet in the parish of Stone in the Vale of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. The parish was divided into two manors, known after the families who held them as Bracey's Manor and St Clere's manor: John St Clere had enfeoffed William de la Merse and William Blacstan, amongst others, as sub-tenants of his manor in the early 13th Century (Victoria County History, A History of the County of Buckingham , vol. 2 (1908), pp. 307-311).
