Engraved allegorical title, engraved dedication, folding engraved map of Virginia (misbound in the 3rd section), 28 engraved plates. 2. Brevis narratio eorum quae in Florida Americae Proviciae Gallis acciderunt. 1591. Engraved allegorical title, engraved dedication, engraved vignette of Noah's Ark, double-page engraved folding map of Florida, second engraved allegorical title, 42 engraved plates. 3. Americae tertia pars memorabile provinciae Brasiliae historiam contnes. 1592. 2 Engraved allegorical titles, engraved dedication, engraved plate of 7 scutcheons, engraved double-page folding map of America, 45 engraved plates. Folio (331 x 227 mm). Modern levant over marbled boards. Evenly toned as usual, expert repairs throughout with a few leaves extended, title to first part laid down and extended, second part title remargined affecting border and final line of imprint, map of Florida backed, map of America back and with lower fold mostly separated, a few instances of dampstain and light spotting, a few early manuscript notes, occasional finger soiling, *with: CUTTER, CHARLES A. A Bibliographical Description of the the Collection of "Grands Voyages" of De Bry. New York: 1869. Edition of 25 copies. Provenance: Dr. Otto Leopold Schmidt, Illinois State Historical Society President (bookplate); Dr. Hans Heinrich Reese, German Olympian, American spy during WWII; University of Wisconsin professor (inscription on front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION, LATIN ISSUE, OF FIRST THREE PARTS OF THE GREAT VOYAGES. First part with several plates with second impression points, Virginia map in second issue as usually seen, other maps in first issue. The first part takes Thomas Harriot's account of the Virginia colony and adds John White's illustrations. Burden describes the Virginia map as "one of the most significant cartographical milestones in colonial North American history. It was the most accurate map drawn in the sixteenth century of any part of that continent. It became the prototype of the area until long after James Moxon's map in 1671." The second part prints the drawings and account of Jacques le Moyne who was aboard Rene de Laudonniere's 1564 expedition to Florida. Le Moyne's map of the area was likely from memory and not accurate, but had considerable influence on maps that were to follow. The third part includes the accounts of both Johann van Staden and Jean de Lery.
