BRUNSCHWIG, HIERONYMUS. Das buch der wund Artzeny. Handwirckung der Cirurgia...Neuw getruckt mit ordenlicher [ sic ] zusatzung. [Strassburg]: Johann (Reinhard) Grüninger 1513. Chancery folio, 263 x 183mm. (10 7/16 x 7 1/4in.), modern vellum, edges stained red, gutters renewed throughout, repairs to fore-margins of A1-3, grazing a few letters on A2, approximately 18 leaves with marginal repaired tears, headlines of Q3v and Q4r cropped, rust-hole to X4-6 catching a few letters, a few wormholes through text block of first 6 leaves, a few marginal wormholes elsewhere, adhesive stain to B1v affecting 3 letters, soft creasing to first 4 leaves, occasional small ink-stains, some dampstaining and marginal soiling . Collation : A4 B-F6 G4 H-X6. 122 leaves, misfoliated [1]-4 9-126, with signatures. Type: 105G (text). Double column. 39 lines and headline. Large title woodcut of wounded anatomical man (pierced by arrows, knives, etc.), full-page woodcut of skeleton with letterpress anatomical captions on B2r, full-page cut of an array of surgical instruments on D5v, 38 other nearly full-page or three-quarter-page woodcuts (including several repeats), most composed of two separate blocks, the majority showing patients undergoing various medical treatments, a few small woodcuts of surgical instruments in the text. Numerous seven-line and smaller metalcut and woodcut initials, space for opening initial with guide letter. Third edition of Brunschwig's Buch der Chirurgia , "the first important printed surgical treatise in German. It combines a compilation of the ancient and mediaeval authorities with Brunschwig's own extensive experience. It contains the first detailed account of gunshot wounds in medical literature and is notable for its woodcuts, some of the earliest specimens of medical illustration" (Garrison-Morton 5559 [first edition]). The other known copies of this edition, which is illustrated with a portion of the woodcuts from the 1497 edition, are similarly misfoliated. Rare. NLM/Durling 742; not in Adams or BM/STC French . Provenance : Title page inscription (illegible) dated 1726; with an autograph postcard signed from Ludwig Rosenthal's Antiquariat, Munich, 6 March 1896, to a Dr. Jennings, attesting to the completeness of this copy, loosely inserted; Juan Carlos Ahumada, bookplate and ink stamps on front flyleaf and on verso of last leaf; the present owner.
