BRUNFELS, OTTO. Contrafayt Kreüterbuch, nach rechter vollkommener art, unud [ sic ] Beschreibungen der Alten besst-beruemptem aertzt, vormals in Teütscher sprach, der masszen nye gesehen, noch im Truck auszgangenAnder Teyl des Teütsch en Contrafayten Kreüterbuchs [edited by Michael Herr]. Strassburg: Johann Schott (1532, 1537). 2 parts in one volume, folio, 306 x 197mm, contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, blindstamped with roll-tools, surface worn, minor repairs, 2 brass fore-edge clasps, b1.4 reversed in binding, some staining, occasional light dampstains, one leaf browned . FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN. Full-page woodcut arms of Strassburg, 277 woodcuts of plants by Hans Weiditz (part one) and other artists (part two), 2 full-page farm and forest scenes, one signed I.K., historiated initials, leaves H4+1 in part one and H2+1 in part two inserted. Nissen BBI 258 I,II; Stafleu & Cowan 855. This German translation of Brunfels's important Herbarum vivae icones , the first and only translation into the vernacular, contains for the first time a substantial introduction by Brunfels, and a register of illnesses and their herbal remedy. 44 new woodcuts which appear only in this edition join 86 woodcuts from the first volume of the Latin editon and 46 from the second volume. Most of these are by Hans Weiditz although other artists, including one signed I.K., provided many in the second part. Provenance : a few annotations, dated 1609 and 1612 -- 17th-century inscription of a Franciscan friary partly erased form title -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie; Horticultural Society of New York, bookplate.
