BRUNE, Johannes de (1589-1658). Emblemata of Zinne-werck . Amsterdam and Middelburg, 1624. 4 o (233 x 174 mm). Additional engraved title and 51 engravings after Adrian van de Venne in text. Contemporary Dutch vellum gilt, edges gilt. Provenance : Eugène Paillet (1829-1901), councellor at the Court of Paris and famous book collector of the 19th century (signature on front free endpaper); acquired from Ximenes, 1965. FIRST EDITION. The fine designs for Brune's emblems are by Adrian van de Venne and engraved by the most talented engravers of the period: Willem van de Passe, Jan Gelle, Christoph Le Blon, Albert Poet, and Jan Swelinck. The engravings depict numerous interiors inhabited by figures in contemporary costume, many showing quaint scenes of daily 17th-century Dutch life. Landwehr, Low Countries 86; Praz, p. 288.
