Beschreibung:

British West Africa, George V, Shilling, 1920G, 5.73gm (Vice 51; KM. 12A). Weak definition on upper part of King’s head and crown, otherwise about extremely fine with sharp rims, extremely rare (£500-700) Footnote Only two other specimens noted as having been sold at auction in recent years, those in the Pridmore (1981, lot 655 – £1650) and Ford (1991, lot 23 – £1500) Collections. The firm of J.R. Gaunt & Son Ltd of Warstone, Birmingham (subsumed into The Mint, Birmingham Ltd in 1973) were awarded a coinage contract by the British West African Currency Board in February 1920. Gaunt’s were requested to make 4 million Shillings from punches and tools supplied by the Royal Mint. Problems arose in executing the coinage contract and only 16,000 pieces had been struck by the beginning of 1921. Continuing technical difficulties caused the Currency Board to cancel the balance of the order in March 1921. Very few specimens survive
