Four letters signed to successive kings and queens of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies by George III, William IV and Queen Victoria, 1796-1842, comprising: VICTORIA, QUEEN OF ENGLAND (1819-1901). Letter signed ('Victoria R') to [Ferdinand II], King of Naples and Sicily, Windsor Castle, 4 August 1842, AFTER AN ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE HER , thanking him for his 'congratulations on my escape from the attempt recently made upon my life', the sincerity of which 'afford me real consolation on this painful occasion', one page, 4to (239 x 180) , bifolium. Two letters signed ('Georgius R’ and ‘George R' and), respectively in Latin to Ferdinand I, King of Naples and Sicily, and in French to [Maria Carolina], Queen of Naples and Sicily, both St James' Palace, 10 January 1796, announcing a daughter [Charlotte Augusta, later Princess of Wales] born to the Princess of Wales [Charlotte of Brunswick] on 7 January, the letter to Ferdiand counter-signed at the base by Foreign Secretary George Grenville, together two pages , 4to and folio (304 x 192mm and 232 x 183mm) , on bifolia. WILLIAM IV, KING OF ENGLAND (1765-1837). Letter signed ('William R') to [Ferdinand II], King of Naples and Sicily, St James' Palace, 22 March 1836, in French, writing with condolences on the death of his wife, Queen Maria Cristina of Savoy, one page , folio (319 x 200mm) , bifolium. Three attempts were made to assassinate Victoria in the summer of 1842, each taking place as she rode in her carriage on the Mall -- the first two by John Francis, on successive days, 29 and 30 May. The third attempt, no doubt that referred to here, took place on 3 July, when John William Bean, a disaffected 17-year old suffering from a spinal deformity, fired at the Queen as she rode back from a service at the Chapel Royal in St James’s Palace: his pistol, which was loaded with an odd mixture of powder, gravel, paper, tobacco and other components, failed to fire, and he was ultimately sentenced to a remarkably lenient 18 months’ imprisonment.
