British Educational Award Medals from the Collection formed by the late T.H. Watts LONDON, Bishopsgate, St Botolph’s Church, Sir Paul Pindar, 1756, an openwork uniface brass badge, crude facing bust, 34mm, 12.51g. Fine, very rare; worthy of further research £50-80 Footnote The purpose of this badge is unknown, unless it be related to the Sir Paul Pindar’s Head tavern which flourished in the last third of the 18th century. Sir Paul Pindar (1565-1650), b. Wellingborough, was a London merchant and member of the Turkey Company who, in 1611, had been appointed Ambassador to the Grand Seignior at Constantinople. The timber-frame of his house in Bishopsgate Street Without was built in 1599-1600 and, when demolished to facilitate the expansion of Liverpool Street station, was presented to the Victoria and Albert Museum
