British Educational Award Medals from the Collection formed by the late T.H. Watts KENT, Ashford, Powers Commercial Academy, an engraved silver Reward for Best Spelling, 4th Class, unsigned, legend both sides, 26mm, 3.64g; Dover, James Temple, Cliff House School, St Margaret’s, brass Pennies (2, varieties), brass Halfpence (3, two varieties, one a duplicate), all façade of building, revs. legend around value, all 24mm, 5.05g, 3.59g, 5.25g, 5.03g, 4.80g (D & W 271/507-9; cf. DNW 134, 338) [6]. First extremely fine and toned, with clip and ring for suspension, others about very fine and better £50-70 Footnote Alexander Power, master of the Commercial Academy, Ashford, author of New Orthographical Exercises by Alexander Power, Master of the Commercial Academy, Ashford, Kent (1812), which met with critical review at the time of publication because of Mr Power’s opinion that the oratory of clergymen and others speaking in public should envelop the then new French radicalism. A further tract on the same topic, published in 1814, also met with criticism. Cliffe House School was founded by John Youden in 1745 and rebuilt c. 1820 by James Temple as a school catering for 120 boys. The tokens were issued by Temple in exchange for the boys’ pocket money. After Temple’s death in 1874 the the school closed and the building later became a hotel. Grade 2 listed, it is now residential flats
