British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1914 The Daily Mirror . London: March 8, 1912, February 11-15 & May 21 1913. 6 issues only, 2 (38.4 x 30.2cm.) Illustrations. (Browning, small tears, some old folds.) Folded as issued. Provenance : Kathleen Scott ( ne Bruce, later Hilton Young); by descent. A group of Daily Mirror newspapers dating from the arrival of the conflicting first news of Amundsen's success in March 1912, to the confirmation of Scott and his companions' deaths eleven months later (February 11-13, 1913, including the "Captain Scott Memorial Number" of February 12), the "Captain Scott Memorial Service Number" of February 15, 1913, and finishing with an issue devoted to reports and images of Scott's final resting place and the expedition in general (May 21 1913). The Daily Mirror had negotiated exclusive rights to the Ponting's photographs with Scott prior to the departure of the expedition in 1910. [ With :] A collection of other newspapers and newspaper clippings, from London, New Zealand, and Germany; these latter all cuttings carefully mounted and captioned in a single contemporary red morocco album. The collection includes reports on various aspects of the expedition: the departure from New Zealand for the Antarctic ("The Weekly News", Christchurch, November 30, 1910), the return of the Terra Nova after dropping off the shore party ("The Weekly News", Christchurch, April 5, 1911), Amundsen's announcement of his success, news of Scott's death, and reviews of Scott's Last Expeditions.
